Bicycling in Maine

Biking is one of the most efficient ways to get around Maine, or anywhere else for that matter. Known as one of the healthiest modes of transportation, Maine leads the pack in biking opportunities for tourists, visitors, and Mainers alike.

Maine Mountain Biking

Buy at Art.com Mountain biking has become the rage over the past couple of decades, but it is not new. According to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, it might have begun as early as 1896 with early infantry soldiers who customized bicycles to carry their gear over rough terrain. Today mountain biking has become a science, with specialized bikes, gear, and equipment for every type of terrain.

If you would like to do some mountain biking in Maine, the weather is usually cooperative by mid to late April, and the season goes all the way through our colorful autumns, when biking scenery is at its finest.

We are all familiar with the Tour de France and Lance Armstrong, but the majority of road bikers will only do community races or not race at all.

From riding down the block to a friend's house to riding across the state or the country, road biking is a great way to get in shape, go from place to place, and see the country.

The beauty of road biking is that you can go anywhere a car can go, other than interstate highways. A road bike can be a mode of transportation in addition to a recreational vehicle.

Road biking in Maine is a treat because of all the wonderful scenery and paved roads through most of the state. Only a few logging roads and obscure mountain roads are still unpaved. Check your maps to be sure.
