Biking is one of the most efficient ways to get around Maine, or anywhere else for that matter. Known as one of the healthiest modes of transportation, Maine leads the pack in biking opportunities for tourists, visitors, and Mainers alike.

Maine Mountain Biking

According to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, it might have begun as early as 1896 with early infantry soldiers who customized bicycles to carry their gear over rough terrain. If you would like to do some mountain biking in Maine, the weather is usually cooperative by mid to late April, and the season goes all the way through our colorful autumns, when biking scenery is at its finest.

We are all familiar with the Tour de France and Lance Armstrong, but the majority of road bikers will only do community races or not race at all.

From riding down the block to a friend's house to riding across the state or the country, road biking is a great way to get in shape, go from place to place, and see the country.

The beauty of road biking is that you can go anywhere a car can go, other than interstate highways. A road bike can be a mode of transportation in addition to a recreational vehicle.

Road biking in Maine is a treat because of all the wonderful scenery and paved roads through most of the state. Only a few logging roads and obscure mountain roads are still unpaved. Check your maps to be sure.


The Bicycle Coalition of Maine offers a month to month calendar of events for both road biking and mountain biking throughout the state of Maine.

The Trek Across Maine is an annual 3-day, 180-mile ride from the mountains of Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel to the city of Rockland on the coast. The Trek is designed to raise support for the American Lung Association of Maine; the purpose is to ultimately improve the quality of life for Maine families living with lung disease.

The MS 150 Bike to the Breakwater is two days in 150 miles to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. There are many options: ride one day or two, or do the 25-mile fun ride. Just do it - and help families suffering from the unpredictability of MS.

The Positive 89 3 Bike Tour, formerly known as Bike for Joy, is a 60-mile ride or 22-mile family fun ride to benefit FM 89.3 WMSJ. WMSJ is a listener supported radio station that plays contemporary Christian music broadcasting in Maine and New Hampshire.

The Casco Bay Bicycle Club in Portland is a club of recreational road bicyclists who schedule weekly rides around the area.

The Maine Freewheelers are located in Searsport; they schedule road biking rides in the downeast area of Maine.

The Moose Tour is a 6-day bike tour in New England that allows riders to explore the great state of Maine from the seat of their bicycle.
